A guide to your first session

What to expect in an online breathwork session

A private online breathwork session with me lasts 90 minutes to two hours. We start with a conversation about what you're carrying, then you breathe, guided by what you shared, and we finish with time to land. You might feel tingling, emotion, tension or release. You are always free to stop.

How do I prepare?

You don't need any experience of breathwork or IFS, and you don't need to prepare anything to say. The practical side is simple:

  • Find somewhere private where you won't be interrupted.
  • Most people lie down, but you can sit if you prefer. Choose a position where you can't fall over.
  • Use headphones if you can. Music is part of every session.
  • Have water nearby.
  • Eat lightly beforehand.

Every session is held online, one to one, so you can take part from wherever feels safest. A session is $200 and runs 90 minutes to two hours, including the opening conversation and time to land afterwards.

If you're not sure yet, start with a free 30-minute Talk It Through call. There's no pitch and no pressure.

What happens in a session?

1. The inquiry

We begin with a conversation. Where you are, what feels heavy, what you're longing for. We also talk about the different parts of you that are present, the ones that protect you and the ones that carry the older pain. This comes from Internal Family Systems, and I explain it in what is IFS-informed breathwork. Your own words become the guidance for the breath.

2. The breath

You breathe in a rhythm, guided by what you shared, and the session moves between rhythmic breathing, set to music, and breath holds. The holds are the pauses, on both the inhale and the exhale, and they create space within the session. In that space, I guide you to connect with the parts we've talked about, inviting them in so you can be with them and understand them, instead of pushing them away. You can read more in what are breath holds in breathwork.

3. The integration

Time to land. To share what moved, and to anchor what shifted so it doesn't dissolve the moment you open your eyes.

What might I feel?

Every session is different, and there's no right way for it to go. People often notice:

  • Tingling sensations in the body.
  • Emotion coming up. That can be tears, and it can just as easily be positive: warmth, ease or joy.
  • Tension in the body, and then a sense of release.
  • Shaking.
  • Visions. Some people see images or scenes while they breathe.

None of these is a sign that you're doing it right or wrong. They are simply ways a body can respond when it's given space.

There is nothing wrong with ending a session in the middle.

What if I want to stop in the middle?

That's fine. There is nothing wrong with ending a session in the middle.

Often it's a sign that a part of you is overwhelmed, or needs more connection or understanding before it can continue. So if you want to stop, we don't rush past it. We spend time understanding the part that felt the need to end the session, and what it needs.

What happens afterwards?

Aftercare comes in the form of emails or voice messages. If you'd like to go deeper, we can arrange one-to-one coaching sessions. You can read about that on the 1:1 coaching page.

Who should check with a doctor first

Please speak to your doctor first if you are pregnant, have a cardiovascular condition or a breathing condition such as asthma, have had recent surgery, or have a history of severe psychiatric difficulty. If breathwork isn't right for you at this time, I'll tell you.

This work is IFS-informed coaching and breathwork, not therapy. I'm not a licensed clinician, and it isn't a substitute for therapy or medical care.

Questions people ask

Do I need experience of breathwork before a session?

No. You don't need any experience of breathwork or IFS, and you don't need to prepare anything to say. The session is guided by your own words and your breath.

How long is a private breathwork session and what does it cost?

A session runs 90 minutes to two hours, including the opening conversation and time to land afterwards. A session is $200.

What might I feel during a breathwork session?

Many people feel tingling in the body. Emotions can come up, including tears, and also positive emotions such as warmth or ease. Some people feel tension that then releases, or shaking, and some see visions. Every session is different, and there is no right way for it to go.

What are breath holds, and why are they used?

A breath hold is a pause in the breath. In my sessions we hold after both the inhale and the exhale, and a hold can last up to three or four minutes. To make it longer, we take small sips of air, exhale fully again, and keep holding. These pauses create space within the session, so you can notice what's there and connect with the emotions and parts that come up. I guide you into and out of each hold, and you can always stop.

What if I cry?

That's welcome. Tears are one of the common ways emotion moves through the body, and you don't need to explain or stop them.

What if I want to stop in the middle of a session?

That's fine. There's nothing wrong with ending a session in the middle. Often it's a sign that a part of you is overwhelmed or needs more connection or understanding before it can continue, so we spend time understanding that part.

Is there any aftercare?

Aftercare comes in the form of emails or voice messages. If you want to go deeper, one-to-one coaching sessions can be arranged.

Who should check with a doctor before trying breathwork?

Anyone who is pregnant, has a cardiovascular condition or a breathing condition such as asthma, has had recent surgery, or has a history of severe psychiatric difficulty should speak to their doctor first. If breathwork isn't right for you at this time, I'll say so.

Ready to book, or want to talk first?
